Baby knitting - what you need to know to get started

KITS FOR BABYS AND CHILDREN

What could be better than a baby's knitwear, knitted with love, in natural wools, all soft and warm. Real cocoons for the first few days, baby's clothes must protect his skin, provide him with all the comfort he needs and be easy to put on and care for.

Because it is naturally very soft, knitwear is perfect for newborns. Unlike fabrics that are stiff, knitwear has an inherent elasticity, which is provided by the stitch. Knitted garments follow the baby's shape and give him ease of movement. This is why knitting layette is perfectly suited to the needs of the baby.
Among the garments to knit are bras, jumpers and cardigans, rompers and bloomers, and of course booties.
Knitting a bra is the most important part of a layette. Generally crossed in the back, it can be buttoned or closed with a tie. Some models are knitted in one piece: you start with the front, then the sleeves are made by adding stitches and finally the back. Knitting a bra takes little time and it is advisable to plan for at least three patterns in sizes 3 months and 6 months.

What material should I choose for my baby's knitwear?

Baby's skin is fragile, so give him the best to protect it. In the first days of life, contact with clothes is a new experience. The baby may react to certain materials and develop skin rashes.
To prevent this from happening, choose natural materials such as cotton, merino and alpaca, and avoid synthetic wools, which can be allergenic and cause reactions.
Cotton is still the most recommended material for baby knitwear. This yarn has many advantages:

  • it is smooth
  • not very fragile
  • easy to care for
  • and can be knitted without difficulty

And its only disadvantage is that it is not warm.
With cotton yarn, you can knit various indoor and summer garments, such as bras, jumpers, bloomers and overalls. With Sponge yarn, a 100% natural and very cotton yarn, you can make bibs or a bathrobe. If you have learned to knit by making a bib, it will be easy to make more than one, it is a very useful pattern. Plan to have at least five.
Alpaca and merino are two quality materials for warm knitted baby clothes. They are also soft to the touch. However, they are more delicate to care for than cotton. For baby knitwear, Tricotez-moi offers Méridou, a 100% natural yarn made from machine-washable merino. This knitting yarn withstands successive washes without shrinking.
